The glymphatic system is a macroscopic waste clearance system or pathway that utilizes a unique system of perivascular tunnels, formed by astroglial cells or astrocytes (glia cells that connect neurons with blood vessels), to promote efficient elimination of soluble proteins and metabolites from the central nervous system.
The perivascular space is a component of the ‘glymphatic’ system which facilitates exchange of molecules between the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the interstitial fluid (ISF) of the brain.
CSF flows into brain tissue and ISF effluxes from brain tissue into the CSF along perivascular spaces.
The glymphatic system helps to get rid of the brain’s waste products.
Such products are filtered through the arachnoid villi and removed by the venous circulation.
