Osteopathy and the Autonomic Nervous System

The Autonomic Nervous System and Osteopathy

Osteopathy: in the osteopathic concept the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Techniques (OMT) is very common.

These techniques concern amongst other manual techniques vertebral manipulations, mobilizations, visceral mobilizations and drainage techniques.

Evidence about neurophysiological reactions indicates that spinal manipulation and mobilization initiate neurovegetative responses.

The effect of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is often not only mechanical but also vascular, neurological and metabolic.

In this book I will discuss the autonomic nervous system and the osteopathic implementation in considering osteopathic goal setting in patients’ assessment and treatment.

Manipulation, mobilization and soft tissue techniques as performed by osteopaths, chiropractors and manual therapists cause a reaction of the autonomic nervous system and this not only local but also segmentally and supra-segmentally.

Mostly, the effect of OMT on the ANS is an inhibition of the sympathetic system or a stimulation of the parasympathetic system. The effect can be local, segmental or general.
