Referred pain from vertebral artery and carotid artery
Osteopaths cannot treat vertebral artery pathology. They must however be aware of the phenomenon and recognize the symptoms for referral.
When a patient presents with these referred pain areas, refer the patient.
The cause of this referred pain can be an arterial dissection, severe atherosclerosis with inflammation.
It is an absolute contraindication to treat the cervical region with manipulation or mobilization.
