Osteopathy and the post concussive syndrome

Post-Concussive Syndrome (PCS)

Headache after head trauma.

The most common symptom of post-concussive syndrome (PCS) is post-traumatic headache accompanied by photophobia.

Post-traumatic headache is a secondary headache with a clinical phenotype described by its main features and resembling one of the primary headache disorders: tension, migraine, migraine-like cluster.

The complaints are headache, dizziness, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and cognitive impairment. Also sleep symptoms are common as well as mood changes, fatigue and a reduced tolerance for noise or light.

In most people, symptoms occur within the first seven to 10 days and go away within three months. Sometimes, they can persist for a year or more.

Treating this syndrome is as challenging as the diagnosis.

General approach:

• Healthy diet.
• Get exercise.
• Good sleep hygiene.
• Manage stress.

Osteopaths examine the cervical spine for eventual (possibly minor and chronic) inflammation that react in the neurovegetative system and treat the cervical spine appropriatly without using excessive techniques.

Beside this, somatic dysfunctions in the upper thoracics are addressed to eventually influence the arterial flow in the brain and dura.
