CSF resembles plasma but there are some differences:
• CSF has a higher concentration of sodium, chloride and magnesium.
• CSF has a lower concentration of potassium and calcium.
• Unlike plasma, CSF has only trace amounts of cells, protein, and immunoglobulins.
Most of the CSF is water (99%).
The composition of CSF is kept as constant as possible, which provides a stable intraventricular environment, critical for maintaining normal neuronal function.
