Paradoxal breathing has to be treated osteopathically in all patients

Paradoxal breathing is inhaling with the abdomen pulled in and narrowing of the lower ribcage.

In paradoxal breathing, the costal parts of the diaphragm move upward and the crura part downward. The opposite movement occurs during exhalation.

The cause of paradoxal breathing can be physical or psychological. This is often difficult to separate. Causes can be developmental, medical, postural or emotional.
